Day 5: Miami

So... last night tho.

Wow. It was wild.

So I signed up for a group with the hostel (the group ended up being pretty much the entire hostel) to go out to a bar which we were told would be very similar to Coyote Ugly (which happens to be one of my favourite films ever). They had free beer for an hour in the lobby and everyone gave me theirs anyway. Man, I got drunk quickly...

I met fellow Australians at the table and then soon after we left to go to the bar/club. If I had to explain it I'd say it was very similar to Scary Canary back at home. I met this amazing dude called Ryan in my hostel room who's from Melbourne and have been hanging around him most of the time. He bought us (about 5 of us) a round of Sex On The Beach shots. Alcohol was dirt cheap and I was already in a bar so I made sure I made the most of it and got smashed, but ended up not spending much particularly because Ryan was shouting us all drinks. Good old Ryan. Oh and also there are two guys in my room who I ended up getting close to and they were giving me drinks as well. They were your typical "Shire" sorta type boys, calling me a "sick cunt". Sick cunt Steven.

There was a stripper pole and all the girls were being skanky and all the guys were just making out with everyone. Hahahaha, that's all I can remember. Oh yes and twerking with the black girl, who I actually didn't know was from Sydney.

So that was last night.

On to today.

I woke up at 8 to get the free breakfast which actually was pretty decent. Cereal, toast, butter, jelly, lots of coffee and I made sure to get extra bread for the day to satisfy me instead of eating lunch.

I proceeded to go to the Vizcaya Museum and Gardens in Downtown Miami (I'm staying in South Beach), which apparently is a must if you go to Miami. It was aesthetically and historically beautiful. It was clad with sculptures of Greek and Roman gods and goddesses. The gardens were immaculate and lavish and the mansion is now turned into a museum. Each room was detailed and precise. I enjoyed it, it was a bit far to get to by public transport though and also quite confusing. I had to ask a Mexican girl on the bus for directions and she immediately thought I was hitting on her and asked if I was French.

"No, but I speak French", I politely replied.

"Vous etes beau," She said.

Oh great.

She stayed on the train with me and before I got up to leave at my stop she gave me a piece of receipt paper with her number on the back. Yes okay.

Anyway...

After that I went back to SoBe and went around Espanola Way, which in my opinion was a let down and very boring and disappointing. All that was there were restaurants which were too expensive anyway and ridiculous. I saw a woman eating a plate of 3 slices of tomato. And that was the full meal..

I proceeded into the Art-Deco district which also was quite boring... It's a residential area and I have to say out of everywhere I was walking I didn't feel safe there.

I continued on to Lincoln Road Mall and entered a few shops, in an attempt to prevent myself from buying anything. I asked the shop attendant at H&M what time it closes and she said most shops on Lincoln Road close at 11PM-midnight. Ok, I told myself to get out of there quick-stat because I can always come back there later and it would probably be better for me money-wise anyway.

I walked along the Boardwalk near Ocean Drive next to the beach. The beach is certainly different to the mainstream Australian beaches. It's long and white sandy. It's definitely beautiful though. I took this as an opportunity to snap as many photos and videos as I could because I don't want to go there tomorrow clad with valuables. Alongside ocean drive were yummy restaurants with Happy Hour drink specials and heady aromas. I'm thinking of going there tomorrow night.

Tomorrow will be my beach day and shopping day. I think Miami is not so much a "touristy" city. It's not like there's a big list of things to see. It's more walking around and seeing the perks of the city and relaxing by the beach. It definitely is the definition of vacation. It's also quite warm all year around and I'm glad the sun came out today. I actually sweated!

Budget for today:

$5.65 - Easy Transport all day pass

$2 - Water

$18 - Vizcaya Entry Fee

= $25.65

Good going.
